What Is a CASA Eye Examination?

A CASA eye exam is a specialised vision check required by the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority. It’s part of the medical certification process for:

  • Commercial pilots (Class 1)
  • Private/Recreational Pilots (Class 2)
  • Air traffic controllers (Class 3)

These exams ensure you have the visual abilities needed to handle cockpit instruments, read charts, perform pre-flight inspections, and respond to rapidly changing environments.

Vision Requirements – What You Need to Know

To pass your CASA eye exam, you’ll need to meet the following vision standards:

  • Distance vision: 6/9 or better in each eye, and 6/6 binocularly – with or without glasses or contact lenses.
  • Near vision: Ability to read an N5 chart at 30–50cm using both eyes.
  • Intermediate vision: Ability to read an N14 chart at 1 meter using both eyes.
  • Contact lens wearers: You must wear your lenses for twice your projected flight time without discomfort or loss of clarity. You will need to bring your backup glasses to the exam too as you’ll need to meet the vision standards with those as well.
  • Colour vision: You must accurately distinguish aviation-relevant colours. If there’s any colour deficiency, an Operational Colour Vision Assessment (OCVA) may be required.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Your CASA eye exam will take around one hour and includes:

  • Distance, near and intermediate vision testing
  • Binocular and peripheral vision checks
  • Colour vision and contrast sensitivity testing
  • Ocular health assessment
  • Documentation and report preparation for CASA submission

Don’t forget to bring your regular glasses, contact lenses, and any spares you have. CASA requires your vision to be tested using all of these. Also, please ensure you have your ID and Aviation Reference Number (ARN) with you at your appointment.

Medical Certificate Validity & Renewals

Class 1 certificate: Valid for 1 year. This is required for:

  • Commercial and air transport pilots
  • Multi-crew pilots (airplane)
  • Flight engineers
  • Student flight engineers

Class 3 certificate: Valid for 2 years. This is required for:

  • Air traffic controllers
  • Flight service officers

If you’re over 60, you’ll need an eye exam every two years, with an annual general medical review by a Designated Aviation Medical Examiner (DAME). If any eye issues are flagged, you’ll be referred back to us or to a designated aviation ophthalmologist.

Fast, Accurate Reporting – Sent Direct to CASA

After your exam, we will complete your vision assessment report – including any occupational colour vision testing – and submit it directly to CASA on your behalf.

Please note: CASA vision assessments are not covered by Medicare. A consultation and reporting fee applies.
